What to know before buying Somontano Wine

History of Somontano Wine

According to remains found, as early as 500 A.C. There are vestiges of vine cultivation in the Ebro Valley, and in the second century BC. There was an important trade around this drink, a factor that influenced the settlement and trade of the italics. Therefore, it can be said that there is knowledge of Somontano wine since Antiquity.

In the Middle Ages, the cultivation of the vine extends throughout the entire length of the present province of Huesca, mostly driven by the Monasteries and religious orders, since wine was an important element for the celebration of Christian rites.

In the 19th century, due to the plague of phylloxera in France, exports significantly increased abroad, a factor that influenced the improvement of the quality of wines. In the twentieth century, from the 60's, wine production rose significantly, driven by the creation of the first cooperatives and with the approval of the Somontano Denomination of Origin in 1984.

Characteristics of the wines Somontano

The production area of Somontano wines covers three distinct geographical areas: the Sierras, the Somontano proper and the plains. In Toral, the Denomination has about 4,000 hectares dedicated to the vineyard.

Somontano is characterized by having cold and long winters and hot summers, having great thermal oscillations in late spring and autumn.

There are fifteen varieties of grapes allowed for cultivation. For the Red Wine we have the Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Tempranillo, Syrah, Garnacha Tinta, Moristel, Pinot Noir and Parraleta. White Grenache, Chardonnay, Macabeo, Gewürztraminer, Riesling, Alcañón and Sauvignon Blanc are permitted for White Wine.

Somontano wines have very peculiar characteristics, such as good graduation, correct acidity and fruity character. In short, wines are very much in line with the tastes of the current consumer.

Rosé Wine, White Wine and Red Wine are made. Within the red wines there are several categories according to their aging: oak (3 months of aging in wood or bottle), Crianza (24 months, of which minimum 6 in oak barrels), Reserve (36 months, In wood) and Gran Reserva (60 months, of which a minimum of 18 in oak will remain).

The wineries of the Somontano stand out in the last years for their vanguardista bet, as much in the design of its facilities as of the labels of the bottles. In addition, they collaborate very closely with the world of art.
