What to know before you buy Albariño

Albariño Wine History

It was the Monks of Cluny who began to make Albarino wine in the Middle Ages, around the 12th century, in Galicia and northern Portugal. The Albariño grape is a variety whose planting is recommended in Galicia and allowed in Cantabria, Castilla y León and Catalonia.

Cambados is the capital of Albariño and the Rías Baixas denomination of origin. The first Sunday in August of each year is celebrated the Albariño Festival, the second oldest in the country and is classified as a Festival of National Tourist Interest.

The Denomination of Origin Rías Baixas was founded in 1988 and includes the territories that, since time immemorial, have made albariños. Currently, it has more than 5,000 vine growers, 161 albariño wineries and 2,400 hectares of vineyard. To belong to it, vineyards must share a number of physical-geographical conditions, such as their proximity to the coast, an altitude, generally less than 300 meters above sea level and be associated with the lower reaches of the River courses. These characteristics are associated with the Atlantic climate of the region, mild temperatures and abundant rainfall all year except in the summer months. For this reason, Albariño wines are considered Atlantic wines.

Characteristics of Albarino wine

The Rías Baixas wines accumulate national and international awards and enjoy high scores in the best specialized guides.

They are currently one of the most prestigious white wines on the market. Generally they are dry wines, with sharp aromas, with floral memories and very fruity, with a fine and prolonged aftertaste. In particular, the albariños are of a nice straw yellow color with golden and greenish irisations. They have a floral and fruity aroma. They are fresh and smooth in the mouth and have a balanced acidity.

Other native varieties such as Treixadura and Loureira are grown, which give rise to wines with intense aromas and light acidity, full in the mouth, pleasant and attractive.

Because of its characteristics, they are wines that perfectly blend with all kinds of fish and seafood, with the new sea cuisine and any type of aperitif.
