What to know before you buy Valdeorras Wine

Valdeorras

Under the protection of a Mediterranean-oceanic microclimate, they were the first to plant vineyards, build wineries and produce wine valdeorras. They gave, in this way, a culture very rooted in wine that made, and continues to do, the delights of the pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago. The richness of the natural resources and the fertility of their lands, made Valdeorras the place of welcome of many towns throughout history.

All the effort made during centuries was rewarded in the year 1945 with the obtaining of the denomination of origin, whose objective is the elaboration of Valdeorras wines of quality and the recovery of two jewels such as the native grapes Godello and Mencía.

The vineyard and production area occupies largely the Sil, Xares and Bibei river basins, where the climate is drier than in the rest of Galicia. Winters are cold, warm summers and mild spring and autumn. It is an ideal climate to produce dry wines of the highest quality. The soils that give rise to the wine of Valdeorras are slate, shallow, some granitic and others settled on terraces and sediments where the boulders abound.

In this typology of soils two types of grapes are developed that give rise to two wonderful wine valdeorras monovarietales. On the one hand, the Godello grapes for the whites, although the Doña Blanca and the Palomino are also grown. On the other hand, the Mencia grape, which is preferred for reds, is planted alongside other varieties such as Brancellao, Merenzao or María Ardoña, Negreda, Garnacha Tintorera, Alicante, Tempranillo and Grao Negro.

The joint effort of winemakers, winemakers, farmers and the regulatory council has made the wine villagers one of the best in Spain, has won prestigious national and international awards and is present in five continents.
