Wasteland 2 Review

The first part of the Wasteland series at one time gained considerable popularity, becoming one of the first games in the setting of the nuclear post-apocalyptic, which at that time gained huge popularity thanks to the films about Mad Max. Years passed, and no one took up the development of the sequel, until in 1997 the first part of the Fallout series was released, which was a spiritual descendant of Wasteland, and set a new bar for quality in the RPG genre, and became the standard of games in the post-apocalyptic setting.

After that, all the games in this setting tried to get closer to Fallout, and few people had heard about Wasteland, and remembered. As the years passed, the RPG genre and the post-apocalyptic setting developed, the Fallout series was reborn in the genre of shooters with role-playing game elements, and fans of the old parts no longer hoped to ever see something close to the first parts of the legendary series.

Personally, I got acquainted with the Fallout series only with the third part, which I really liked. However, familiarity with this setting was much earlier, in the game The Fall: Last Days Of Guaya, which in turn tried to be similar to Fallout, and although it was inferior to Fallout in almost everything, it had one feature, namely that the main character was constantly accompanied by a team of fighters. And this process of development from green beginners who do not know which side to take up the machine, to a team that is ready to resist an entire army, has become one of the biggest advantages of the game. As for Wasteland 2 itself, we have a classic party RPG in the universe that was destroyed by a nuclear war.

The main character of the game desert ranger is a novice who was assigned a task on which a professional ranger was killed, namely to establish radio communication in the district and simultaneously investigate the murder of his brother. In his travels, the main character will be forced to find himself fighting companions, and together sow good and democracy in the state of Arizona.

A fairly simple plot overlaps with very interesting side quests that can be completed in different ways, and where the player will constantly have to make a choice, and sometimes not even consciously. Without going into details, I will give a small example. The radio says that our help is needed in one place, on the way there the player receives another alarm signal, and the attitude towards your character and your squad will change from the choice of the player.

The gameplay of the game is similar to the classic Fallout. The player moves on the global map between settlements, and each has its own life, its own problems, worries and conflicts, and only the player can decide whether to try to quench all conflicts, or just leave behind mountains of corpses. The combat system is similar to the UFO series. Each team member has a certain number of action points, for which he can make certain movements on the battlefield, or shoot at enemies. This combat system opens up tremendous opportunities for tactical maneuvers, and in the same battle you can win in a dozen different ways. The pumping system is also similar to Fallout, the player throws the main parameters to the hero at the beginning of the game, after which special skills, and only then perks. With each level, the player receives leveling points, for which he can improve the level of shooting with certain weapons, hacking, medicine, and other skills. The right combination of the various qualifications of the squad's fighters will make a truly invincible team, but if you carelessly approach this case, you can safely start the game again.

Not all fans of the post-apocalyptic setting liked the retrofuturism of the Fallout series. In Wasteland, it is still quite realistic, real types of weapons, equipment, the general entourage. As for the world of the game, it looks just fantastic, NPCs who load the main character with their very real problems, total injustice and hopelessness reign in the world, and you want to plunge into this hopeless world with your head.

So, I can recommend Wasteland 2 to all supporters of this topic, fans of old-school and hardcore RPGs, and people who were disappointed in Fallout 4. The game is definitely worth their money.
